My approach to therapy is grounded in functional contextualism. Simply put, this means I’m less interested in labeling thoughts, feelings, or behaviors as “good or bad,” and more interested in understanding how they function in your life and whether they help you move toward what matters most to you. Together, we will explore how certain patterns show up in your life and work at new ways of relating to your thoughts, emotions, and experiences that may offer more flexibility and choice. I bring my full self into my work, with an understanding that self-awareness grows in the context of a real, supportive relationship.
Clinical background and experience
I began my career in social work in 2017 in outpatient community mental health, working with a wide range of persons with diverse psychosocial needs. While there, I assisted in the development of one of Maryland’s first Medicaid-funded DBT programs and served as the Lead Trainer. I later transitioned to a private practice in Bethesda, Maryland that offers comprehensive and adherent DBT to teens, their families, and adults. As a DBT therapist I have served the roles of both individual therapist and DBT skills group facilitator, teaching mindfulness, distress management, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness skills.
In graduate school I was introduced to third-wave therapies and contextual behavioral science by Paul Holmes, PsyD, who has developed a modified version of DBT over the last decade—C-DBT (Contextual-DBT), or more recently, IBT (Inference-Based Therapy). C-DBT/IBT assists people in the processes of 1.) increasing awareness around the cognitive, emotional and behavioral patterns keeping us stuck in cycles of distress, 2.) using exposure to decouple historically established (trauma) responses from triggers in the present moment, and 3.) referencing our values and commitments to inform the choices we make.
I continue to receive training in C-DBT/IBT in a weekly seminar with Dr. Holmes, his team and other C-DBT/IBT clinicians around the country. I have also received one-on-one mentorship since 2017 and value the ongoing process of learning and honing my skills.
I am available for telehealth appointments for those located in Maryland. If you are interested in working together, you are welcome to reach out to schedule a 15-minute consultation call, which can help you decide if you would like to proceed with an intake appointment.
